Frequently Asked Questions

How do I manage clutter?

Dear E,
I am a very creative person and usually have part of my space dedicated to clutter. I notice when I am in a big growth period my place is especially messy. How do I manage clutter?

Dear L,
It makes sense that your place would become more cluttered when you are in a big growth period. During those times things internally are falling apart, or disorganizing in order to reorganize in a different way based on your newly integrated information. Your space is reflecting that back to you. It is important to stay in relationship to the clutter, without judgment. It is so easy to use clutter as a way of perpetuating the habit of “beating oneself up,” so the question is , “How can I befriend this part of my experience?” I like your way of dedicating a place to your clutter. When you are in a big growth period you might put piles into paper bags or find some way of acknowledging clutter and staying in relationship to it is some small way. For people who are creative beginning to sort through the piles, can produce an intuitive state, leading little by little to clarity. Trust the process.
Best, E

Tolerance for clutter is different
Dear E,
How do you make peace with your mate when your tolerance for clutter is different. He holds onto everything and I love to throw things out. I love open space and his stacks of journals, papers, etc. weigh me down.

Dear J,
How about relating to his piles as top soil? Perhaps living within all those journals and papers is fertilizer for his life process. Maybe your roots are more air born. Sounds like a good compliment. In any case, these days clutter gets a bad rap and lots of judgment. Life is messier than most of us would like to admit and clutter simply reflects process.
Best, E
